Invitation to Lecture by Dr. Randy Schekman
Dear colleagues and friends, We are pleased to announce that Dr. Randy Schekman, Editor-in-Chief of eLIFE Journal, Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley, and Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, will deliver a lecture on “Publishing the Most Important Work in the Life Sciences” at 15:00-16:20 on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at the Second Conference Room (3F) of the Building for Humanities and Social Sciences, Academia Sinica. The eLIFE journal is a researcher-led, open access scientific platform in the biomedical and life sciences. It ranges from the most fundamental and theoretical work, through to translational, applied, and clinical research. The digital publication is a collaboration between the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Max Planck Society, the Wellcome Trust and over 200 of the world’s most talented biomedical scientists. It was established at the end of 2012 and Dr. Schekman is the first Editor-in-Chief. A distinguished cell biologist, Dr. Schekman focuses his work on the mechanism of membrane assembly and vesicular traffic in eukaryotic cells. He led his laboratory to discover many of the genes and proteins required for secretion in yeast. This finding helps us better understand human genetic diseases that affect core components of the secretory machinery. Dr. Schekman’s academic achievements have won him wide recognition in the scientific community. He shared the Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize and the Lasker Award with James Rothman in 2002, and was awarded the Massry Prize in 2010. Dr. Schekman is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society and the National Academy of Sciences. He was elected President of the American Society for Cell Biology in 1999 and served as Editor-in-Chief of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences from 2006 to late 2011. Dr. Schekman’s lecture promises to be an enriching experience for all researchers, in particular for early-career researchers. You are cordially invited to attend.
