“The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away.”（那世界，那個可理解、有法律的世界，漸漸流失了。）

這句話出自英國作家威廉‧高汀（William Golding, 1911-1993）最有名的一本寓言小說《蒼蠅王》（1954）。故事敘述一群英國男孩，在飛機失事後，困在孤島，如何自救，⋯⋯又如何陷入暴力與相殘的過程。作者將孤島當成人性的實驗室，當清純人類（innocent humans，以十歲上下的男孩為樣本），在無助與恐懼之下，到底會發展出怎樣的心態與行為：是理性、富同情心、互助？或暴力、野蠻、自私？
