這句話出自十九世紀末、二十世紀初期英國劇作家蕭伯納（Bernard Shaw, 1856-1950）的劇本《華倫太太的職業》（Mrs. Warren's Profession. 1893）。這部劇本，描寫華倫太太與女兒Vivie間的關係。受限於女性當時工作環境，華倫太太在歐洲經營妓院，供女兒念完大學。儘管Vivie一開始理解媽媽的苦心與無奈，但當媽媽在衣食無缺後，仍不願放棄妓院行業，Vivie揭穿媽媽虛偽與愛慕虛榮的假象。
