French supermarket sells ugly fruit and vegetables at discount to combat food waste

In March of this year, shoppers in Provins, France, were presented with an unusual sight in their local Intermarché supermarket:rack upon rack of "ugly" fresh fruits and vegetables, including disfigured eggplants, ridiculous potatoes, grotesque apples, ugly carrots and so on.

Sold at a 20 to 30 percent discount, the idea behind the promotion was to persuade consumers that food tastes the same regardless of how it looks.

The operation was a hit. Since then, the supermarket chain has repeated the operation in a dozen of its Parisian stores and other French retailers were quick to follow in the chain’s footsteps.

According to the Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, 30 percent of global food production is lost after harvest or wasted, and a lot of this food is just thrown away before it hits the shelves because it doesn’t conform with the idea of what a piece of fruit or vegetable should look like.

Furthermore, in industrialized countries, 40 percent of food losses occur and this represents just about the total food production in Sub-Saharan Africa.
